The 2011 SFFAS kicked off with a celebration of the 30th Annivesary of the SFFAS and the 150th anniversary of Gump's at the Designers Circle Pre-Preview Reception. For the first "Hidden Treasure" of the show, one lucky person got a piece of cake with an edible pearl and won a gift of Gump's "Baroque Pearl" scent. Everyone got to enjoy this first look at the many treasures on view at the show.

I'm heading out to San Francisco today to see my sister and attend the Antiques Show. Hoping to get a little bit of R&R, I'm going to take a break from blogging until next week. And if this trip is like previous ones, I might end up buying so many secondhand books that I'll have to ship them home. If only Atlanta had used bookstores like those in San Francisco.

Finding Hidden Treasures at the San Francisco Fall Antiques Show

The annual San Francisco Fall Antiques Show (SFFAS) has longstanding ties with the Fine Arts Museums, sharing benefactors, lenders, board members and volunteers, including special project curator of European Decorative Arts and Sculpture, Maria Santangelo. For the past several years, Santangelo has donated her curatorial capabilities to the exhibition that serves as the centerpiece of the fair.

This year, SFFAS commemorates its 30th anniversary with the exhibition Hidden Treasures: Celebrating 30 Years of Surprising Finds at the San Francisco Fall Antiques Show. Inspired by the pearl—a valuable treasure hidden within an oyster shell that is the traditional 30th anniversary gift—the 2011 San Francisco Fall Antiques Show celebrates three decades of finds by featuring works of art that have an element of surprise.

The entryway into the Fort Mason Festival Pavilion.

Santangelo and co-curator Holland Lynch (daughter of former president of the Museums’ Board of Trustees Richard Goss) selected various works that highlight the unexpected, including trompe l’oeil paintings, boxes with secret compartments, metamorphic furniture and other visually intriguing pieces.

The reasoning behind these deceptive designs may be protective, such as a tea caddy’s secret compartment concealing a valuable silver tea spoon;

whimsical, such as a snuff box crafted in the shape of a shoe; or practical, such as a side table that unfolds into a set of library stairs.

This exhibition is made possible through generous donations from antiques enthusiasts, many of who are also donors to the Fine Arts Museums. Santangelo approaches local private collectors, SFFAS exhibitors and Bay Area cultural institutions—including the Fine Arts Museums this year—to lend artworks to this four-day long showcase.

“This is an exhibition on a serious shoestring,” says Santangelo. “But we try to present a small, focused and beautiful presentation with proper labeling and didactics.”

A related lecture series will feature talks on hidden treasures ranging from royal collections safeguarded inKunstkammern, given by Archduke Dr. Geza von Habsburg, to stolen artworks still at large, as shared by former FBI agent Robert Wittman.

She treated SFFAS Connoisseurs and Collectors to a special presentation on the history and style pearls. Guests such as Connoisseurs Circle Chair OJ Shansby, Show Chair Michele Goss, Lisa Grotts, Holland Lynch, Jennifer Raiser, Andrea Topper, got an exclusive show-and-tell. The amazing strands of gray and gold pearls were a group favorites. About her table for the Gump’s "Hidden Treasures" celebration, Rosenfeld says, "I always discover hidden treasures when traveling, and I collect antique jewelry from India, so those elements combined to inspire my design. I started with this incredible copper Paul Mathieu dining table and a Tony Duquette fabric—Duquette of course being celebrated for his jewelry and theatrical settings. The 'jewels' of our setting are the gold flatware, cuff napkin rings and gorgeous emerald- and ruby-toned Hermes glassware from Gump’s."

“I always find my best pieces in San Francisco”

It has become quite clear to all lovers of design where the new Tuesday night hot spot is—cozied up on the sofa hanging out with the chic set of designers who comprise Bravo’s television show Million Dollar Decorators: Martyn Lawrence Bullard, Kathryn Ireland, Jeffrey Alan Marks, Mary McDonald and Nathan Turner. The glamorous bunch allows us to salivate over their heavenly designs, while entertaining us with their witty personas.

This past week, our very own 2010 Fall Antiques Show played a leading role, when Jeffrey Alan Marks and partner Ross came in search of the perfect coffee table.

While attending the Designers Circle Pre-Preview Reception, they stopped by Therien, then visited epoca and found a rare John Dickinson African white plaster table. They stopped to chat with San Francisco’s very own “Grand Dame of interior design,” Suzanne Tucker. The next night at the Preview Party gala, Suzanne wanted the table for a client, but allowed Jeffrey and Ross to buy the piece for their own collection.

The San Francisco designer John Dickinson is known as “the most innovative and original American interior and furniture designer of the 20th century” and his creative genius is highly regarded in the world of design. Jeffrey describes him as “[setting] the tone for California style.” This white plaster coffee table, with its casual and whimsical aeshetic, perfectly illustrates that style.

We hope to see Million Dollar Decorators hunting for treasures at the Preview Party on October 26th!

On Friday, October 15, almost 100 San Francisco Fall Antique Show Supporters gathered at the lovely home of Roberta Economidis in Nob Hill to celebrate the upcoming event.

As they sipped on Pinot Noir provided courtesy of Black Kite and Cabernet Sauvignon from Cultivar Wine, guests enjoyed bites of dim sum provided by Barbie's Boutique Catering and discussed the fabulous Chinoiserie theme. Gift cards were provided by Thermidor restaurant.

Show Chair Michele Goss raised the excitement of the attendees by offering a sneak peak into what will be found at the show, and Enterprise for High School Students Board President KC Lynch spoke of the enormous benefit the Show offers to the students served by the program.

Thursday night, SFFAS Enthusiasts Committee Chairs Bryan and Jenna Hunt hosted a party for their group of patrons at the very fashionable Black Fleece/Brooks Brothers store on Fillmore Street.

The decor of the store, with antique luggage and stylish works of art, was a perfect backdrop to talk about some of the new and returning dealers to the antiques show. Of course, the event also offered shopping opportunity for the perfect outfit to wear to the upcoming Preview Party!

The San Francisco Fall Antiques Show had its first event in Marin, courtesy of the show's lovely new Marin County Regional Chair, Mary Poland.

Last Friday in Ross, Mary welcomed a wonderful group of women for a Chinoiserie lucheon in her elegant home. Interiors designed by Suzanne Tucker of Tucker & Marks, the decor incorporates Chinoiserie throughout the interiors. Interior architecture by Andrew Skurman.

Suzanne Tucker spoke about the history of the antiques show and presented highlights of the upcoming event. Kick off event!

Last Thursday, the newly invigorated Supporters Committee of The San Francisco Fall Antiques Show, led by Co-Chairs Wheeler S. Griffith and Michelle Elizabeth Curtis, hosted an informative and fun kick-off event.

The evening was a wonderful chance to walkabout eight galleries in the historic Jackson Square area and end with a wine reception hosted at the lively Taverna Aventine, with delicious wine tastings thanks to Freeman Winery.

This self-guided tour included: Arader Galleries, with The Ames Gallery; Argentum- The Leopard's Head; Foster Gwin, with Danish Silver; The Lotus Collection, with Therien & Co.; Montgomery Gallery; Peter Pap Oriental Rugs, with Cadre; Daniel Stein Antiques, with epoca; and Sarah Stocking Fine Antique Posters.

The Co-Chairs announced that Supporters Committee members will now be invited to a year-round series of events featuring designers, dealers, and collectors from the Bay Area and beyond. If you are interested in becoming a member of the Supporters Committee, a donation of $200 will get you invited to these events and to the Preview Party on October 27. Opening night!

The opening night gala was a smashing success!

People arrived and were immediately greeted by Enterprise students dressed in Egyptian costume - and behind them you could see the colossal statement the foyer made with its transformation to Egypt on the Bay. People were gasping at how wonderful everything looked. After oohing and grabbing a cocktail, they were on their way to enjoy the fabulous night.

As usual the food by Dan McCall was a hit. The infamous lamb chops, perfect roast beef, and fresh huge shrimp towered high, and of course the caviar bars and center desert island were constantly busy.

Some people come for the food- but I think most everyone was there to see what treasures they could find throughout the show. I saw many signs with red dots in many booths- so I hope that it was a successful night for all of the dealers that worked so hard to ship everything in and set up their spaces in particularly artistic ways this way.

Major favorites from the swarms of people included Axel Vervoordt, Carlton Hobbs, Robert Young, Therien, and Steinitz. People adored the antiques textiles at The Lotus Collection. Lots of people were happy to see the local favorite Epoca new to the show this year, and also contemporary silver in the fresh booth of Garrido.

The whole evening was magical - it was like we were all transported to Egypt for the night - nobody wanted to leave!

Behind the scenes with Andrew Skurman

Long before the execution of the “Tut” egyptomania theme started, the visual expression of the concept had to be worked out and the logistics determined.

In stepped talented architect Andrew Skurman, who volunteered his time to serve as the creative director of the antiques show this year (also maybe a creative genius for pulling all of this creativity together).

I met with Andy earlier this week to talk a little bit about how the process started and to learn more about how it will all come together. I am sure all of you blog readers will really like this behind the scenes look and special preview of what to expect just next week!

I really love the sketches and photos (Abu Simbel) that inspired Andy. He worked closely with Ryan Associates (to build it all) and Shirley Robinson (to hand paint the hieroglyphics on each of the 6 entrance columns)

I am so excited to see all this hard work come together - This dramatic entrance will sure be one to be remembered and really make a opening statement!

Benefactors party

Thursday night-

It was a hot and unusually humid night in San Francisco - but that didn't stop the festivities for the Benefactors party, hosted by Austin Hills (as in Napa Valley favorite, Grgich Hills wine!) at his wonderful house on Jackson Street overlooking Alta Plaza Park. Upon entering, you were embraced by an outside foyer of ivy into a grand dark paneled foyer. You also were greeted by hords of SFFAS patrons enjoying themselves.

The living room and dining room were the perfect place for laughter and fun. The spaces are so proportional and everyone enjoyed the collections of art and artifacts grouped together. Quite possibly the "HOT SPOT" or “COOL SPOT” (depending on your point of view) of the evening was the outside terrace off of the living room, where people enjoyed the fresh air on the warm night.

The space was cleverly designed with a large scale mirror on one end covered with trellis - which was a real optical illusion. Everyone thought that space just went on and on- and with the reflection of the mirror and all of the people- it magnified the fun that everyone was having. The countdown to showtime begins…

Enthusiasts Committee party

Last Wednesday was a great night for the SFFAS Enthusiasts Committee at the chic boutique Carrots, located at 843 Montgomery Street. This store was started by Melissa and Catie Grimm (both of whom grew up around a lot of carrots - their family owns Grimmway Farms, the largest grower, producer and shipper of carrots in the world!). The space is nestled in historic Jackson Square, occupying the former restaurant Ernie's, a San Francisco landmark, featured in Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo.

Guests mingled among creative displays, chit-chatting while enjoying delicious catering by Dan McCall, a great sneak-peek for what is to come for opening night of the show: LAMB CHOP fans, get ready! The food passed by Enterprise students - did you know that you can hire Enterprise students to help at your events? Check out the website at: www.ehss.org

Designer Circle kick-off party!

Last night was the kick-off event for the Designers Circle of THE SAN FRANCISCO FALL ANTIQUES SHOW—let the stylish fun begin!

The weather was perfect in San Francisco, unusually sunny and warm, and the perfect end to the beautiful day was attending the Designers Circle reception hosted by Dr.Terry Gross at her stunning apartment in Nob Hill.

Terry Gross is the owner of Urban Chateau Antiques in San Francisco, which for years had a wonderful location at the SF Design Center (and before that on Sacramento Street). Recently, Urban Chateau transitioned to working with clients on a more intimate level by appointment and online through their website as well as 1stdibs. Urban Chateau was started by Terry Gross with her daughter Lisa (Gross Erickson) as the outcome of personal passion: 30 years of studying and collecting period French, Italian and other European decorative arts.

From the moment that you walk into the Gross apartment you feel welcomed and cosseted by the décor. The entrance has a subtle glow of color, almost the tone of candlelight, with the mirrors and crystals shimmering and twinkling in the reflection. Looking out, the setting on the top of Nob Hill, allows for glorious views of the city from every window.

But it is the interiors that offer the best views of all. Each room is so carefully arranged and well-crafted; you can see that every detail has been thought-out and done with the utmost attention and talent. The apartment was created by Terry Gross in collaboration with Ike Kligerman Barkley Architects, along with many pieces and collaboration from Ann Getty.

Some of Terry Gross’s antique furnishings, such as fabulous chairs (that she is sitting in the photo), will actually be featured in the Exhibition at the show: Eygptomania: Nile Style in the Decorative Arts. We all enjoyed the Egyptomania theme by way of the delicious "Blue Nile" cocktails served (you might see a few of these cocktails in the photos!), as well as a few enthusiastic guests in some fun head pieces! The food was great too, by Fork and Spoon.

Thank you so much to Terry Gross (and her husband Scott who was not able to attend the event) for welcoming us into their lovely home. I know that every member of the Designers Circle enjoyed seeing your works of art and got excited about the show.

Welcome to the NEW blog of THE SAN FRANCISCO FALL ANTIQUES SHOW.

I am Grant K. Gibson and I am a San Francisco interior designer and blogger. I have been involved with the show for the last five years- serving as a member of the Designers Circle. This year I will be designing one of the entrance vignettes when you first walk into the show (so be sure to check this space out and stop by to say hello!)

I have been asked by the show this year to start this blog so that we can share upcoming information with everyone out there. We plan on linking this to Facebook as well (for all of you really cool and techie people out there). There are several parties leading up to the show - so we will post party pictures!

Check back for more details on upcoming events for the show - including a list of the dealers and how to get in touch with them and a list of the firms on the Designers Circle committee, with links to each of their websites.

2009 is a very exciting time for San Francisco with the recently opening “ King Tut” exhibition at the de Young Museum, and it just happens that the theme of is the 2009 San Francisco Fall Antiques Show is EGYPTOMANIA!
